In a nutshell, YES, big time primarily because the upside potential it has to make money now and with big returns 50% to 80% with a very low start cost compared to any other industry. I personally own a solid established pressure washing business making 6 figures yearly and love it. I have not yet found a business model or industry that can give this kind of reward comparatively.
As with any business there are pros and cons to it but the pros definitely out weigh the cons big time.
Not to mention when you get to my level or bigger hopefully its bliss to say the least.
Here is a list of the pros and cons off the top of my head. (Not just writter that doesnt live and breath this)
Biggest Pros
- Literal satisfaction with every job.
- Money in hand after completion (not waiting, days, weeks or months)
- Create your own hours
- Low start up cash needed
- Can be learned online and practiced with courses online
- Big margins compared to other services
- Can be practically ran virtually
- No ceiling to how much money you want to make
- Upsell potential like no other
- Every job leads to another
The Cons
- Working outside in the heat or in some cases cold temperatures
- Danger with heights
- Handling chemicals that can cause injuries
- Property damage possible
- Seasonal Months and at the mercy of mother nature
- Heavy competition, Easy to start
Please note that although my information is bias because I do this for a living it can still be proved side by side with other industries and will out compete them. Trust me I have searched.
A few years ago I was broke as a joke working a full time job I knew I wanted to do more so I searched and tried other businesses until I came across Pressure Washing. Now after it all I have the ability to do what I want when I want, own some real estate, have the ability to buy my dream car and now have the knowledge to help others in the same position I was in. Growing without so much unnessary pain and heartache. If it took me 5 years and I could either help you to do it in less time or less headache than why not. I wish I had somebody like that for me, after all isnt that what life is about, helping the next guy to be better than you. (More on this in future videos and posts)
Lets start off with the first PRO of satisfaction. With every literal job you do you are changing the way it looks and delivering a feeling. Similiar to driving a dirty car and then driving when its shined up prestine and clean, you feel like a CEO. Keep in mind that when we clean we are delivering a feeling. It is not something to be taken lightly, after all this is where people spend time, they have spent their hard earned money and in some cases raised a home here.
Next PRO we have is money in hand after the job is done and not floating till next month. Examples of other businesses would be pool services, landscaping, irrigation, construction, mold remediation etc. Instead we get the money NOW or at the very most a few days later because the customer is on vacation or happy hour.
To have the money in hand after the job is done is a blessing, even as a employee we do not get that treatment. Sales is life, dont forget that. Now with the money in hand we can eat, pay our bills or find out how to multiply it. (I like this one!)
Next we have the ability to create your own hours. You cant imagine the freedom you have from when working an a 9 to 5 employee to being self employed, what a blessing , now you call the shots. Dont take this lightly either, remain focused but enjoy it when needed. Now instead of asking for premission to go on vacation or to an event you can go ahead setting up your own schedule around you life, not the other way around. Also note there are levels to this once you are established with a solid business plan you can achieve this. Dont be misled this is not a get rich quick business and do whatever you want, it takes time. Once you have a solid reputation even as a small owner operator with leads coming in you can do as you please meanwhile I suggest going balls to the wall and working 7 days a week weather its completing jobs, quoting, selling the job to the customer, invoicing, maintaining equiptment etc.
The low start up cash needed to start is crazy honestly, I personally started the business with I.O.U.'s. My 4 gpm pressure washer I used was my dads that he had stored in the garage and borrowed his truck to do jobs nearby, figuring it all out, all I could do was pressure cleaning jobs, I didnt even have the money to get a soft washing system.
You can start a business like this for as little as $500, maybe less and I do not mean renting out equiptment. (I will make a few youtube videos on this)
This type of business can be learned for the most part online and through practice, some in person courses maybe needed if you feel more comfortable learning that way.
That is very big for the most part I learned through trial and error until I found one of the best ways to clean homes so it makes sense for me, my crews, the customer and my equiptment. Trusted me I have tried it all.
Then we have big margins come into play compared to other services especially for the money invested.
In my own personal experiance face to face with other pressure washers I have noticed many people ditch their careers and professions to start completly new in the power washing business. At first I was confused by this because coming from not having any money at all to then hearing someone leaving a good paying job/business to start in exterior cleaning seemed crazy. What I later came to realize was they all did it either for one of two reasons. NOT ENOUGH MONEY or NOT ENOUGH TIME. Their previous income did not allow for time with family and did not allow them to be financially free.
Tell me, wouldnt you be confused if your friend or family member started a new business from scratch when they already have a good job or business. Likley they need the time or money. I have met car salesman, nurses, tow truck owners, corporate office workers making 6 figures, chef, people in real estate, mechanics, painters, welders etc. Even people who left the industry thinking they could make more money in something else, just to come back and buy another pressure washing trailer to continue washing with.
Power washing can be ran from practically anywhere with the right team and systems in place, this could like approx 2 to 3 years. To be able to vacation with little to no problems, although in my experiance I would rather be working and making money.
The next PRO is no ceiling to how much you can make, it is up to you to see where you take it.
Here is one of my favorite things about pressure washing.
The potential for upselling, its insane both in the business and abroad.
I cant think of another business where you can literally upsell a couple hundred job and turn it into a $1000 plus jobor have nieghbors passing by asking for a quote. The other upsell would be in selling other jobs that arent power washing related such as window cleaning, paver leveling/repair, concrete work, driveway repair or complete replacement, painting, Bathroom/ home remodels, roof repair/ replacement, electrical, plumbing and so much more. Some you can do yourself or add to your service list and others you cant because of the requirements but it can be subbed out for a referal fee without laying a finger.
Lastly is every job leads to another. By working outside people can see what your doing and are curious to get a quote. Leading to more jobs, beautiful.
Flip the page and we have the cons of starting this type of business that is not to be taken lightly.
Starting off with working outside in the heat or in some cases cold. Although this can be daunting for many people its definetly something that can be overcome when you see the money it makes, by hydrating the right way or just sucking it up, there are worse jobs out there that pay way less for way more effort.
The danger with heights is one I would not take lightly, coming from someone who has slipped on a total of 1 roofs (due to being careless) even the greats sometimes mess up. Yet I do recommend you take the proper training and precautions into doing this kind of work.
We handle chemicals that can cause irreversable injuries or property damage, its interesting even saying this becuase in my business we havent had any bad injuries like this, due to proper training.
The next con would be property damage, I will tell you from the thousands of jobs we have done even including the jobs I did before on my own, the chances for property damage are slim with the correct training and knowledge you or your team can take these jobs down like nobodys business.
Then we have seasonal cons of the business and being at the mercy of mother nature. Funny enough I was told this by family when thinking of starting in Ivan's Pressure Cleaning and now I am one of the best in my area with my name coming up often. I have practically become inevitable and I love it.
Look, always look for the bottom line, people can say this and that about what they think but the facts are the facts, the bottom line is all businesses are seasonal, you think any business consistantly maintains its sales record without going down year in and year out. Good luck. Even disney world has slow seasons and thats disney world.
All businesses have slow seasons but they make it up in the peak season so it all balances out.
We are at the mercy of the weather meaning any cleaning job we do usually revolves around the environment but this can definitely worked around , with proper positioning. For the most part softwashing can be done even if its raining, personally in my business we head out to clean even if its raining all day or most of the day. Us being the professionals we gauge if we can wait out the rain to complete the job or need to reschedule sometimes even to not waste we do a side job or another job near by while it rains to not miss out on the daylight. Again we are at the mercy of daylight.
Finally we have heavy saturation primarily because its easy to start. Thats a pretty big joke if I have ever heard one.
From my experiance day in and day out the people who are at that level dont even show up on our radarand if they do they take the cheap annoying lead we dont want all so they can afford beer money. Im looking to grow a pressure washing business, not to sell a job at donation prices. Ill donate on my own accord.
As with other industries there are usually 3 tiers in the customer playbook
CHEAP: Most headache, least paying
MID TIER: Reasonable pay or fair work
HIGH END: Highest paying looking for professionals to handle their home like its their own.
To recap I honestly believe the pressure washing/ soft washing industry is one of the best if not the best industries to be involved in.
The pros definitly outweight the cons and I am a solid example into what it can do for you.
It is not easy but it is worth it
Definetly easier with POWER PRO NATION
